The Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise History
Hellman’s real mayonnaise got its start in 1913 when its namesake;Richard Hellmann opened up a delicatessen in New York City with his wife Margaret. By 1920;Hellman began selling his signature sauces;including his famous mayonnaise spread;already regarded as the best mayonnaise in the city.
Hellman sold two versions of his recipe;including one he regarded as the best tasting mayonnaise; his favorite version featured blue ribbons on the jars. The blue ribbon imagery remains to this day;as well as the famous recipe.
